The Secretary of State for the Home Office, more commonly known as the Home Secretary, is a Senior Minister of the Crown and responsible for the domestic affairs of the Empire of Great Britain. They are appointed by the Sovereign on the advice of the Prime Minister and sit ex-officio as a Member of the Cabinet. The Home Secretary can be a Member of Parliament, but this is not always the case.
This office, known as an interior minister in other regions, was created by Prime Minister Colfax County on 20 October 2018, after the region had settled from moving from another region. While the purpose of the role has not changed over time, it specific duties and responsibilities have changed many times. The longest consecutively-serving Home Secretary is Victor Newton, who held the post for over 119 days. The longest cumulatively-serving Home Secretary is Josephine Carew, The Countess of Strathmore, who served for 208 days over five ministries. The shortest-serving Home Secretary is Joshua Sherwood, who held the post for 6 days. On 9 November 2020, Vanya Snow-Bauheim became the first woman to hold the role, followed by Lily Theadora, Elizabeth Howard-Campbell, 1st Duchess of Edinburgh, Firentia Somerset-Howard-Campbell, The Countess of Clare, Josephine Carew, The Countess of Strathmore, and Anastasia Nelson, Lady Hereford. The incumbent Home Secretary is Anastasia Nelson, Lady Hereford.
The office holder works alongside other Home Office Ministers to complete the goals set by the Prime Minister and the duties and responsibilities as set by law. The performance of the Home Secretary is scrutinized by the Home and Public Administration Committee of the House of Commons. [1]
