The February 2025 General Election was held from 17 February 2025 to 21 February 2025 with 27 eligible voters to elect an unnamed number of seats to the House of Commons. It was the eighth under the electoral system known as the Romefeller Method adopted by the Representation of the People Act 2024. [1] This election followed great political upheaval after the British Workers' Party collapsed and the Heron Party declined to field any candidates.
Despite an impressive performance in the January 2025 General Election, the British Workers' Party quickly lost wind after they failed to win the premiership, which went to the Heron-Unionist Parliamentary Coalition. The left-wing party collapsed after their Leader, Noa de Carteret, resigned following a near ejection from the House of Commons and vote of no confidence from his party after long periods of inactivity. The parliamentary coalition also wasn't unaffected as their Leader, August Carew, The Baron Calder of the Unionist Party was not returned to his seat (though he would later win a by election and return only a couple weeks later). Calder resigned and the parliamentary coalition rallied behind William Somerset, 2nd Duke of Cambridge of the Heron Party. With neither side truly getting the candidate they wanted in 10 Downing Street, the 37th Parliament of Great Britain started with low enthusiasm. This situation only compounded throughout the term as resignations led to a total of four by elections, a record in the Empire's history.
With the Prime Minister waning in activity, the session being labelled as the "Ship of Theseus", and Lady Strathmore issuing a statement that there should be an election, the Duke of Cambridge gave his advice to the Sovereign on 14 February 2025. Two days later, George VII dissolved Parliament and called a General Election. The next day, registration opened to candidates, with seven total registering and campaigning beginning. On 19 February 2025, registration closed and the next day polling opened. Polling ended on 21 February 2025.
