The Senior Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords is the second-most senior officer within the House of Lords and deputises for the Lord Speaker when they are absent and at their direction.
The role was created during the 8th Session of Parliament with the passage of the Standing Orders Resolution (2020) on 2 October 2020, authored by the first Lady Speaker, The Duchess of Buccleuch. Even as the Standing Orders in the Lords has changed over time, the role of Senior Deputy Speaker has not.
