Early Life

Christian Aurelius Carleton was born on 23 June 1987 at Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, the only child of father Arthur Edward and mother Sophie (née Chattow) Carleton.  His father was a physician, and his mother was an artist.

He grew up in Sutton, which lies in close proximity to Hampton Court Palace, a situation that Christian credits for inspiring a lifelong fascination with Tudor history.

Carleton attended Wilson’s School, a state boy’s grammar school with academy status, and, later, Epsom College, a co-educational independent school.  At the latter, he was a member of the History Society, Classics Society, Chamber Choir, Boys’ Acapella, and the swim team.  He obtained two A-levels in History and Geography.

Education

In 2005, Carleton enrolled at King’s College London where he studied history.  At university, he was a member of the Classics Society, Student Actions for Refugees, the Rolling Tones (an A Capella group), the King’s College Choir, and the swim team.  He also completed an internship at Historic Royal Palaces, working at Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London.  Christian graduated from King’s College London with a BA in history and a first-class honors degree.

Carleton then attended the University College London and graduated with a PhD in Early Modern History in 2012. His primary field of study is Early Modern British History, specifically focusing on the Tudor Era. However, his expertise extends to much of royal history in general.

Public Service

In 2020, Carleton began his career in government working as Deputy Secretary for Culture.

On 20 June 2021, he was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Bath where he also served as Deputy Speaker.

During the Forstye Administration, Carleton served in several Cabinet positions including First Secretary of State, Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary, and Culture Secretary. Furthermore, he served as Deputy Prime Minister but voluntarily vacated the position to head two Cabinet departments simultaneously.  In addition, Christian briefly served as Election Commissioner.

Carleton’s research into royal history and his strong support for the monarchy attracted the attention of the Crown.  After serving briefly as Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales, Christian took on the position of Principal Private Secretary to King William V.  The King quickly noticed Carleton’s keen attention to detail and exceptional organization skills and honored him with the additional appointment as Lord Chamberlain.

After being created Lord Braybrooke, Carleton was appointed to the House of Lords and was soon selected as Deputy Lord Speaker.  Upon the resignation of the sitting speaker, Christian was appointed, by King William V, as Lord Speaker.

In September of 2023, Carleton became the First Secretary of State, Minister for Culture, Events Coordinator, and Head of the Civil Service, in the Romefeller Administration. Carleton served the Crown, once again, as First Clerk of the Green Cloth and Private Secretary of HM Press Office.

In August of 2024, Carleton returned to public service, again, elected as a Member of Parliament and appointed as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He also worked for the BBC and in the Office for Culture, Media, and Sport.

Career in Academia

Christian began his academic career as a curator at Historic Royal Palaces.  The position led him to assist with the development of new exhibits at Kensington Palace and the Tower of London.

In 2014, Carleton became a Senior Lecturer and then a Professor of History at the University of Roehampton, London.

From 2020-2021, Carleton served as a Visiting Professor in the History Department of the University of Chicago.

In October of 2021, Carleton was a Professor of History at Boston University in the United States.  After previously serving as a visiting professor in the States, he longed to develop a full set of courses in British history, which was lacking at most American universities.  During his tenure at Boston University, Carleton developed and taught eight new courses focusing on British history from the Middle Ages to the modern day.  In another first for that university, Christian supervised the first graduate students to complete theses and dissertations in subjects related to Early Modern British History.

In 2023, Christian became a Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Cambridge.

Interests

Carleton is an avid swimmer and has been consumed by a passion for history his entire life.  Christian also sings and plays the piano and guitar.  He volunteers for a number of charities including Mosaic LGBTQIA+ Young Persons’ Trust and Historic Royal Palaces.
