The May 2026 General Election was held from the 1 May until the 5 May 2026. It was the sixteenth election held under the electoral system known as the Romefeller Method adopted by the Representation of the People Act 2024. Also known as the Portillo Election or Fools Gold Election, so called for the fact that the only party contesting for Number Ten, the British Royalist Party, declined to form a government, following its return of just one Member of Parliament from four experienced candidates. Likewise, the Unionist-led "Big Beautiful Coalition" had run merely to serve in Opposition, and declined to form a government.
