Constituencies of Interest
Constituencies of Interest are constituencies deemed to be of significant historical and cultural interest, and are preserved for the use of the Member of Parliament connected to them, as per the conditions laid out in the Constituency Legacy Act 2024.
In order for a normal constituency to be considered a Constituency of Interest, the MP must have either served as an MP of that constituency for six sessions of Parliament; served as Prime Minister; or have recieved a special authorisation from the Election Commission, if the constituency is still deemed of significant personal value and heritage but does not meet one of the two previously mentioned criteria.
Constituencies of Interest may only be represented by the Member of Parliament they are first represented by (once they have become Constituencies of Interest), and prospective Parliamentary candidates seeking to run for the contituency must first recieve the express permission of the MP in question. While Constituencies of Interest of departed or deceased citizens are still noted in the records, they are not subject to the same restrictions.
There are 12 active Constituencies of Interest, belonging to 10 citizens. Two citizens, August Carew (Stirling; County Clare) and Charles Wright (Cambridge; Orkney and Shetland), have multiple constituencies listed. The oldest Constituency of Interest is Brecon and Radnorshire, the constituency of James Stephenson - it is also the premier Constituency of Interest of Wales. For Canada, that honour goes to Vancouver Centre. England's is York Central, Scotland's is Glasgow Central, and Ireland's is County Clare. Only one citizen has a constituency of interest solely on the basis of long service, that being Llywellyn Evans-Jones.
