The Secretary of State for Defence, more commonly known as the Defence Secretary, is a Senior Minister of the Crown and responsible for the military affairs of the Empire of Great Britain. They are appointed by the Sovereign on the advice of the Prime Minister and sit ex-officio as a Member of the Cabinet. The Defence Secretary can be a Member of Parliament, but this is not always the case.
