Goldsborough Hall is a Jacobean stately home located in the village of Goldsborough, North Yorkshire, England. Set within 12 acres of formal gardens and grounds, it is renowned for its views over the River Nidd. It is the retreat of Josephine Somerset, The Duchess of Bedford on the Great North Road.
The House
Surrounded by peaceful parkland and lush greenery, the Hall exudes a calm, stately presence that feels both welcoming and refined. Its exterior is striking, with a long, symmetrical front, tall windows, and a classic red-brick façade softened by climbing ivy and carefully tended borders. The setting is serene, offering sweeping views and a deep sense of stillness and seclusion.
Inside, the Hall is spacious and elegant, with high ceilings, richly furnished rooms, and a warm, luxurious atmosphere. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, while deep tones, plush fabrics, and thoughtful detailing create a sense of quiet sophistication. Each space feels carefully considered—comfortable yet grand—with graceful staircases, cozy lounges, and open areas that invite you to pause and breathe. Whether gathered around a fire or wandering through the hallways, the experience is one of ease and timeless beauty.
The grounds are equally enchanting, with wide lawns, formal gardens, and hidden corners for quiet reflection. Paths wind through rose beds, past fountains, and into shaded woodland, creating a sense of discovery with every step. Goldsborough Hall is not only a place of elegance but one of peace and stillness—an ideal retreat where architecture and nature exist in perfect harmony.
Motto
Si omnes te negaverint, ego numquam te negabo—“Even if all deny you, I will never deny you”—is a deeply personal vow, famously spoken by Peter to Christ on the eve of betrayal. It is an intimate promise, charged with emotion and conviction, yet shadowed by the inevitability of human frailty. Spoken in love but broken in fear, the phrase embodies both the beauty and the fragility of loyalty when tested by circumstance.
In its pared-down form, Etiam si omnes, ego non—“Even if all [do], I will not”—it becomes something else entirely: a creed of quiet defiance. It is this version that Josephine Somerset, The Duchess of Bedford, claimed as her own. It is the motto of Goldsborough Hall, etched not only into stone but into the very shape of its legacy. Stripped of names and sentiment, it is a declaration of moral independence—unyielding, unbowed, and alone if need be. Where others may follow the crowd, she—like her motto—stands apart. What was once a fragile vow of companionship becomes a hardened emblem of moral courage—the kind that does not cry out, but endures.
History
Ownership
Josephine Somerset, The Duchess of Bedford and Windsor (then Countess of Strathmore) bought the residence on 11 April 2025 with the hope of it forming an estate with Harewood House, owned by the Wright family. [1] However, the sale went through and the Duchess kept Goldsborough and its 12 acres. [2]
This Sceptred Isle
Coming out of political retirement, Josephine Somerset, The Duchess of Bedford (then Marchioness of Harewood), delivered a speech from the front steps of Goldsborough Hall on 7 May 2025. [3] She claimed the region was seeing "a rapid degradation of His Majesty's Government," saying she was "sick and tired of 'just because', 'it won't hurt', and 'why not'." This came after a contentious hearing in the House of Lords, of which she served as Lord Temporal, which confirmed Aphobob Wright as Director-General of the British Broadcasting Corporation. [4]
